Toddler 'critical' after lorry hits buggy

A toddler was in a critical condition in hospital today after his buggy was struck by a lorry.

The two-year-old sustained injuries to his pelvis, lungs, liver and spleen when his pushchair was caught by the vehicle in St Peter's Road, Margate, Kent.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police said the boy's eight-year-old sister and 58-year-old grandmother received less serious injuries in the incident, which happened on Monday lunchtime.

All three were taken to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, but the toddler was later transferred to King's College Hospital in London where he was said to be in a critical but stable condition last night.

The spokeswoman said the incident was believed to have happened as the family, who are local, were crossing the road. The lorry driver was not injured.

St Peter's Road was closed for around two hours afterwards.
