The ones to watch: new Little Dorrit leads Vogue's list

Hot ticket: Claire Foy

A young actress who left drama school last year has been heralded as the face to watch after landing the lead role in the BBC's autumn blockbuster.

Vogue magazine says Claire Foy will be the brightest star of the autumn, putting the 24-year-old at the top of their annual list of the 40 hottest people and trends to watch over the coming months.

The actress stars alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Andy Serkis in Andrew Davies's TV adaptation of Dickens's Little Dorrit, which will run for 16 weeks on BBC1.

Miss Foy, of Southwark, graduated from Oxford School of Drama last year and has already appeared at the National Theatre in a trio of gritty plays about teenagers. Vogue said: "You might not recognise her now but Claire Foy will surely become a household name this winter when she plays Dickens's heroine.

"Foy's look is perfectly drawn for playing Amy Dorrit."

Vogue's "don't miss" list covers jewellery, fashion, people, design and the arts.

It also features doo-wop indie singer VV Brown, who comes from east London. Other tips are M&S's Percy Piglet sweets, and artist Sarah Moon, whose latest exhibition opens at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in Chelsea on 16 October.

The restaurant at The Connaught, now under the direction of French chef Hélène Darroze, is feted as the best table in town. Darroze is praised for her use of "robust flavours" inspired by her childhood in southwest France.

The best café slot is dedicated to The Deptford Project, a traditional British café housed in a converted Sixties railway carriage.

It sits in the old railway yard at Deptford Station and is the centrepiece of an attempt to brighten up the high street. It includes a lavatory in a shed done up as a shrine to Elvis and a weekend creative industries market.

Even takeaways have a category in the list, with this year's gong going to XO To GO, a new venture by Will Ricker, the man behind restaurants E&O, Eight Over Eight and XO.
