The Influentials: Who's in and who's out?

13 April 2012

Our annual magazine chronicles London's power-brokers and agenda-setters. However, influence can shift quickly. Gideon Spanier looks at who's in and who's out.

Making moves

FASHION
Katie Grand, 36
Editor, Love

Grand, former editor of über-hip style magazine Pop, is launching her new Condé Nast title, Love, as London Fashion Week begins on Friday. Grand has a second string to her bow as a stylist who has worked with Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.

Under pressure

FINANCE
Eric Daniels, 57
Lloyds Banking Group,
chief executive

His previously untarnished reputation is taking a battering after last October's acquisition of HBOS, at the behest of the Government, which now looks disastrous. American Daniels announced his bank will now make a £10 billion loss and he has had to waive his bonus.

Uncertain future

LITERARY LIFE
Anthony Cheetham, 65
Ex-Quercus chairman

One of the doyens of London publishing, Cheetham has quit Quercus amid creative differences with fellow directors. He is leaving just after the imprint had its first "number one" on the fiction bestseller charts with Steig Larsson's The Girl Who Played With Fire.

Riding high

MUSIC
Chris Martin, 31
Coldplay singer and guitarist

His band collected three Grammys last week and are up for four more awards at this week's Brits. Martin has also proved a canny business brain, giving away free downloads which helped boost paid-for sales of his hit album Viva la Vida for label EMI.

Up and coming

FINANCE
Xavier Rolet, 49
London Stock Exchange, chief executive

The former head of Lehman Brothers' French business, Rolet replaces Dame Clare Furse. He has the major task of maintaining London's reputation as a global financial centre and fending off bids from rival stock exchanges hoping to seize control. Shares in the LSE rose five per cent on his appointment.

Off the list

SPORT
Luiz Felipe Scolari, 60
Former Chelsea manager

The World Cup-winning manager became Chelsea's fourth boss in five seasons to be shown the door by owner Roman Abramovich. Scolari is thought to have picked up a £7.5 million pay-off.
