A natural antiseptic, it is thought to help reduce blood cholesterol levels and prevent colds, indigestion and stomach upsets.

It is a member of the lily family along with onions, leeks and chives.

Roman proverb warned: 'Be very suspicious of anyone-who does not eat garlic.'
