The Dispossessed: Duke of Westminster takes our campaign above £1.5m

12 April 2012

The Duke of Westminster today backed the Evening Standard's Dispossessed Fund with a £75,000 donation.

With an estimated £6.75billion fortune, making him the richest Briton, the duke owns large tracts of central London in a vast property empire that spans the globe.

Today he hailed the Dispossessed campaign as a way to bring long-term change to the capital.

"All credit is due to the Evening Standard for your campaign to highlight the poverty that exists across London," he said.

"The Dispossessed Fund will help to support many small voluntary groups to do much-needed work within their local communities.

"I hope that it will bring about a sustained long-term reduction in poverty in our great capital city."

The duke's property portfolio covers approximately 300 acres of the best commercial and residential areas in Mayfair and Belgravia, including the land on which the US Embassy stands, in Grosvenor Square.

His property company, the Grosvenor Group, also owns estates in Lancashire, Cheshire and Scotland.
The duke is involved with, and actively supports, more than 250 charities and other organisations, and holds the rank of major-general in the reserve forces.

His donation boosts the Dispossessed Fund to more than £1.5 million. Every donation up to the £1 million mark is being matched by the Government.

Donations above £1 million will be used to set up a permanent endowment fund to make a real difference to the lives of thousands of Londoners.
