Terror alert as man drives into BBC HQ

12 April 2012

A major terrorist alert was sparked at the BBC after a man drove a car into the front doors of its White City headquarters.

The red Vauxhall Cavalier careered straight into the reception area of the building last night, bringing fears that a suicide carbombing attempt was under way. The driver is understood to be a Muslim and had a copy of the Koran in the car. The vehicle was later found to contain no explosives. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A man, aged between 20 and 30, was removed from the car. We are keeping an open mind on the motives."

The building was evacuated and the nearby A40 closed off in both directions.
