12 April 2012

Tessa Jowell and Ken Livingstone paid tribute to the 7/7 victims today, the sixth anniversary of the Tube and bus bombings.

Home Secretary Theresa May and the London Ambulance Service's deputy director of operations, Jason Killens, also laid wreaths at the 7/7 Memorial in Hyde Park, to remember the 52 commuters killed by four suicide bombers.

Shadow Olympics minister Ms Jowell and Mr Livingstone were at the memorial at 8.50am, the time of the first of the first explosion on July 7, 2005.

Ms Jowell, who was Olympics minister at the time of the blasts, and the then mayor, Mr Livingstone told tearfully how they heard the news in Singapore, after the announcement that London would stage the 2012 Olympics.

"We immediately cut the celebrations to come back but the plane broke down and we were waiting for hours," said Ms Jowell. Mr Livingstone said: "We found it really frustrating. We wanted to be back here."

The emergency services also paid tribute today, with the London Ambulance Service's deputy director of operations, Jason Killens, laying a wreath.
