Tate movie for the Olympics is a cracking idea, Gromit

12 April 2012

The Tate is joining forces with Aardman, the animators behind Wallace and Gromit, to create its first movie - a £3million animation made with children in time for the 2012 Olympics.

The film will be made by and for children across the UK over the next two years with funds from the Legacy Trust, an independent charity set up to support cultural activities that celebrate the London Games.

The idea is to use great artworks from the Tate collection to inspire children aged five to 11 to contribute their ideas to the film. They will then create every aspect of the animation, from drawing the characters to devising the plot and sound effects.

The Tate and Aardman will run production workshops around the country and children will also be able to contribute their ideas on an interactive website.

Tate director Nicholas Serota said it was a uniquely ambitious national project. "Over the next two years we will collaborate with the best creative minds, professional and children's, on an unprecedented scale," he said.

"Every child in Britain can be involved in The Tate Movie and we will help them to draw on their imaginations, lives and communities while developing their visual literacy, and inspiring the artists of the future."

Dugald Mackie, chair of Legacy Trust UK, said the trust hoped The Tate Movie would play a key role in enthusing young people about the 2012 Games. He said: "The Olympics are not just about sport, and The Tate Movie project can help to engage children in cultural and creative activities in the run up to London 2012."

Dave Sproxton, co-founder and chairman of Aardman Animations, said he believed the spontaneity and creativity of children combined with Aardman's film-making expertise would create an inspiring and entertaining film.
