Surfer rips out sharks eye

A youth has told how he ripped out a shark's eye to escape as it was biting off his foot. Hoku Aki, 17, was attacked on Monday while body boarding in Hawaii, about 150 yards off a beach at Kauai.

Strumming a ukulele in his hospital bed, he said: "I tried to open the mouth and get it off me. That didn't work so I grabbed the shark's eye and ripped it out and he let me go."

He added he thought he was going to die. "It was tossing me all over the place. I heard my leg break."
