Straight talker versus the popular tactician

Battling it out: Sir Paul Stephenson is known for his effective approach, while Sir Hugh Orde is a skilled politician and tactician who gets results
13 April 2012
Sir Paul Stephenson

For: An effective chief officer credited with much of the success of the Met in his time as deputy to Sir Ian Blair. He is seen as straight talking and unlikely to rock the boat if chosen. He has experience fighting terrorism and is good with media.

Against: He is part of Sir Ian Blair's old regime and his judgment has been questioned over the arrest of Tory MP Damian Green.

Sir Hugh Orde

For: He is a clever tactician credited with steering a path through Ulster politics.
A thinking man's Lord Stevens who is also popular with the rank and file. He has experience fighting terrorism, is good with the media and would raise morale at the Met.

Against: May be too clever and charismatic for politicians at City Hall who want a "boring" candidate.
