Stars campaign to keep open Alzheimer 's centre

12 April 2012

Violinist Nigel Kennedy and author Tony Parsons are among stars campaigning to save an Alzheimer's centre from cuts.

They joined 1,500 Camden residents to sign a petition against the loss of the Netherwood Centre in Kilburn which is described as a lifeline for sufferers and their families.

The day centre, which costs about £250,000 a year to run, is used by 35 people. The council is cutting £16 million from its adult social care budget as it seeks to save £35 million this year.

Kennedy condemned the "appalling consequences every community or 'small society' will suffer while our gambling banker friends get away with it".

Netherwood was to shut in July but last week's council budget meeting delayed a decision until September.
