Tottenham Hotspur football club could set up its own free school, it emerged today.

The club has had talks with schools minister Lord Hill about creating its own school for youngsters on its youth development scheme.

Tottenham officials told the Times Education Supplement the plans depend on the club pressing ahead with a new 56,000-seat stadium at Northumberland Park, next to the club's current home at White Hart Lane.

A spokesman for the Premier League said: "We are supportive of clubs getting involved in the free schools programme. All our clubs work closely with local schools and colleges on ensuring their young players gain a thorough education."

A DfE spokesman said: "We welcome applications from all groups, including football clubs, wishing to set up free schools."
