Soham critic to be watchdog chief

Evening Standard13 April 2012

THE man who slammed the social services for failing to spot Soham murderer Ian Huntley is the new head of the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Sir Christopher Kelly, a former Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health, takes over as chairman with immediate effect.

The appointment comes at a critical time for the Financial Ombudsman Service, given the growing number of complaints from the public over mortgage endowment mis-selling. These now account for two-thirds of its work. Staff numbers have almost doubled in the past two years to 940.

Kelly, also a board member of the National Consumer Council, fills the post left vacant when Sue Slipman joined the NHS Confederation in October.

He slammed social services over the Huntley affair in a report for North East Lincolnshire Council last summer.
