Sir Antony Sher plays the fat knight as Barbican welcomes back RSC

10 September 2013

Sir Antony Sher is to play Falstaff in a production that will extend the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new ties to the Barbican.

The RSC said today that Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 will be staged at the venue in December 2014, following David Tennant in Richard II this autumn. The RSC quit its Barbican home controversially in 2002, leaving a theatre specially built for it. But the two organisations are embarking on a three-year educational collaboration, including pre and post-show events, and projects in schools. The Young Shakespeare Nation scheme will work with Prince Charles’s Foundation for Children and the Arts to inspire new fans.

Henry IV, with Jasper Britton as the king, opens in Stratford-upon-Avon in spring.
