Shopkeeper gunned down for standing up to robbers

A shopkeeper is seriously injured in hospital today after being shot in the chest trying to stop armed attackers stealing money from his till.

The 65-year-old man had emergency surgery after the raid at the post office in East Dulwich. Two men, one carrying a gun, entered the shop on Saturday and demanded cash from the till behind the grocery counter. When the owner refused the gunman fired. The victim was taken to a south London hospital where he was treated for serious chest injuries. His condition was today described as stable.

The robbers, described as black, aged 25 to 30, slim and wearing dark clothing, drove away in a purple or maroon Fiesta towards Forest Hill.

Police would not say if the men escaped with money. A spokesman said officers were examining CCTV footage in an effort to catch the men.

  • A woman was being questioned today after a man was found dying in the street from knife wounds. Officers found the victim after a disturbance early yesterday morning. The man had staggered from a house in New Addington, Croydon but died later in hospital in Farnborough.
