Shop sales still surging

THE ECONOMY is slowing and British troops are on their way to Afghanistan, but consumers are still hitting the shops in droves.

Retail sales rose by a surprisingly high 6% last month, says the British Retail Consortium. Big-ticket household items, such as white goods and televisions, were major sellers. Food sales were also strong. But clothing was less popular as the warm October weather delayed purchases of winter clothing, now on wide display.
