Police investigating the death of a Surrey couple pulled from a river on the Norfolk Broads have recovered a sex toy, duct tape and cable ties from their 38ft hire boat.

Detectives are working on the theory the woman, who was identified today as Annette Creegan was strangled by her partner before he took his own life.

Police are treating the deaths as a domestic incident.

The woman’s 13-year-old daughter, who was found on the boat on Saturday, is being cared for by relatives.

Two bodies were pulled from River Bure on Sunday after a hire boat was reported missing.

Officers have also retrieved a blood-stained sheet stuffed into a carrier bag, a laptop, screws, brackets, lengths of cable and two tubes of lubricant gel.

Post-mortem examination results show the woman was dead before entering the water, probably as the result of strangulation.

The man, named locally as John Didier, an NHS worker with family links to Arkansas in the US, died of drowning.

Officers are investigating the possibility that another factor, such as a deliberate overdose, contributed to his death.

The couple were both in their forties. Further forensic tests will be carried out on the woman’s body. The man is expected to be formally identified later today.
