Second child for Mayor Livingstone

13 April 2012

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone announced the birth of his second child today.

In a statement issued through a spokeswoman, Mr Livingstone said: "All the staff in the hospital, and especially the maternity unit, were wonderful."
The mayor will take a paternity break from public engagements but will continue to deal with any urgent or important issues where necessary.

Mr Livingstone became a father for the first time at the age of 57 when the couple's son, Thomas, was born in December 2002.

The couple met in 1996 when she was working at the London Evening Standard's ES magazine, for which he was a restaurant critic.

They began seeing each other after Mr Livingstone ended his 20-year relationship with Kate Allen, the UK director of Amnesty International.
Ms Allen and Mr Livingstone split in November 2001 after spending several months apart, saying they aimed to remain good friends.
