Oxford Street raid: An officer at the scene
12 April 2012

Jewel thieves carried out a daring smash-and-grab raid on a busy Oxford Street shop in daylight today.

It is believed that four robbers on two scooters carried out the raid at the Leslie Davis shop at about 10am. Pictures showed two sledge hammers left at the scene.

Passers-by took to Twitter in the minutes after the robbery to describe the scene.

Kiss radio presenter Rickie H-Williams witnessed the raid and wrote: "4guys on 2motorbikes trying to smash and grab leslie davis jewellers in broad daylight."

A police spokesman said: "Police were called just after 10am to reports of a smash-and-grab raid at a jewellers shop in Oxford Street.

"There are reports of four men on two scooters smashing a shop window with hammers and making off with the contents."
