Schoolboy tourist is buried alive

12 April 2012

A 14-year-old tourist died after being buried alive on an Australian beach.

Michael Brannigan, from County Kilkenny, Ireland, was digging a deep hole in wet sand at Noosa on Queensland's Sunshine Coast when it collapsed on top of him.

His mother, Marie, who was asleep, did not raise the alarm for more than an hour. When she did, locals spotted the collapsed hole by her side and dug the boy out with their bare hands.

Rescuers tried to revive him but pronounced him dead at the scene.
