Sales tot up for whisky producer

12 April 2012

WHISKY maker Burn Stewart crept back into the black in the six months to December thanks to growing demand from British supermarkets, a bounce in sales to South Africa and the Far East, and a falling interest bill.

The distiller made £12,000 before tax compared with a loss of £904,000 last time and it says the outlook was positive. UK sales increased by 8% with shipments up to each of its supermarket customers. Exports did even better - up 21%, partly because of the resumption of normal shipments of the Scottish Leader brand to South Africa after disruption last year. Exports to South Korea were also higher.

Lower interest rates cut the interest bill from £2m to £1.6m. Meanwhile, the company has hedged against any upward move in rates.

There is no dividend.
