Saddam judge and son killed

A judge and a lawyer with the war crimes court that will try Saddam Hussein have been gunned down in Baghdad.

The murders, a day after the court announced details of its first planned cases, prompted fears of a terror purge against Iraqis involved in the trial.

Parwiz Muhammad Mahmoud al-Merani, 59 and son Aryan, 26, were killed in a drive-by shooting yesterday outside their home. The identities of court staff are meant to be secret to protect them from attack.

Meanwhile, at least one Iraqi died and 28 others were wounded this morning when a suicide car bomb blew up outside an Iraqi army base in western Baghdad.
