Russia's $650bn boosts military

Russia will spend $650 billion on 600 new warplanes, 100 ships and 1,000 helicopters by 2020 for its poorly equipped armed forces.

Eight new nuclear submarines and two Mistral aircraft carriers are also planned.

Defence Minister Anatoli Serdyukov has sacked 200,000 officers and disbanded nine of 10 army units.
