Royal wedding's charity fund raises more than £1 million

12 April 2012

MORE than £1 million has been generated by a charitable fund set up for the royal wedding.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had asked wedding guests and members of the public to donate to one of 26 charities rather than send them presents.

Today it was announced that £1,058,367 had been raised. The money will be distributed to the 26 funds by the couple and their charity advisers. The beneficiaries, who stand to receive an average of about £40,000 each, include Beat Bullying, said to have been chosen by Kate after suffering bullying at school. The fund was set up six weeks before their April 29 wedding and continued to collect donations until the end of last month. People donating to the fund included William's RAF search and rescue colleagues.
