Roman helmet set to fetch £300,000

Find: one of only three examples
12 April 2012

A Roman helmet complete with face mask discovered by a metal detector in Cumbria is a rare find which could be worth £300,000 at auction.

Christie's is to sell the work next month.

Uncovered by a detectorist who wants to stay anonymous in the hamlet of Crosby Garrett in May, it is one of only three comparable examples ever discovered.

Georgiana Aitken, of Christie's, said: "When it was initially brought to Christie's I could scarcely believe my eyes."
