Ring of steel and it's only a friendly

Patrick Sawer12 April 2012

Thousans of riot police, backed up by commandos, are taking part in a massive South Korean security operation for the World Cup.

Fearful of the threat of international terrorism and the reputation of England's hooligans, the South Korean authorities have left nothing to chance.

Even though the match between England and South Korea at the Seogwipo stadium on Jeju island was only a friendly, commandos were even patrolling the nearby Han river.

Riot police have been rehearsing a variety of scenarios. Officers are armed with anti-hooligan equipment, including rocket propelled nets and bullet proof plastic shields.
