'Regime's a joke' says older brother of Kim Jong Un

Sibling rivalry: Kim Jong Nam
13 April 2012

The older brother of Kim Jong Un, the new leader of North Korea, has declared the new regime "a joke" that is destined to fail.

Kim Jong Nam, below, told Japanese newspaper Tokyo Shimbun that "the Kim Jong Un regime will not last long. Without reforms, North Korea will collapse."

Kim, who lives in exile in China and Macau, said that he fell out of favour with his father after pushing him to enact economic and political reforms.

He admitted he is "under the protection" of the Chinese government, adding to speculation that Beijing is keeping him in reserve as a potential leader of North Korea.

"Without reforms, North Korea will collapse and even if such changes take place the regime will collapse. I'm concerned how Jong Un, who merely resembles my grandfather [North Korea's founding president, Kim Il Sung], will be able to satisfy the needs of North Koreans.

"Kim Jong Un is just a nominal figure and the members of the power elite will be the ones in power."
