Rebel yellers: Brixton

DJ motormouth Chris Moyles likes the Brixton life
Hugo Rifkind13 April 2012

The last word in urban chic. Like Notting Hill pre-Richard Curtis.

Who lives here?
A bohemian set including writer Will Self, dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, satirist Chris Morris, novelist Tibor Fischer and DJ Chris Moyles.

How many stops to civilisation?
Only four to Victoria, six to Oxford Circus.

House prices?
Low. A four/ five-bed house can be yours for as little as £350,000. Flats vary hugely depending on exact area, from £125,000 for an ex-council to £250,000 for a nice pad on Helix or Lambert Road.

What's good?
More central that any other last Tube stop. Good bars, a lively market and a host of restaurants. Nearby Brockwell Park boasts tennis courts and the Lido.

What's bad?
Brixton still has a problem with street crime, and an open drugs trade. Schools are poor.

What do they say? 'I still find white men in pinstripe suits chomping tuna sashimi here incongruous; it's really hard to forget cars burning in the streets, but Brixton has changed a lot.' Tibor Fischer
