Kimberly Quinn is to step down as publisher of The Spectator, it was announced today.

Mrs Quinn said she wanted to become more involved with her family's businesses after 10 years with the magazine.

She hit the headlines in 2004 when the story broke of her affair with then Home Secretary David Blunkett.

The couple had a three-year relationship, during which Mrs Quinn gave birth to their son, William, now aged four.

Mr Blunkett recently admitted the break-up of the affair took him to "the brink of insanity". He resigned as Home Secretary in December 2004 after he was accused of fast-tracking a visa for Mrs Quinn's nanny.

Mrs Quinn remains married to Vogue publishing director Stephen Quinn.

She said in a statement: "Publishing The Spectator has been a wonderful job. Always challenging and always entertaining.

"My family, however, have asked me to become more involved in their businesses and properties. This will entail constant travel. To do both jobs was not an option."

The Spectator's chief executive, Andrew Neil, said both circulation and revenue rose during Mrs Quinn's tenure.

"During Kimberly's time at The Spectator, the magazine has moved to new levels, becoming by far the most successful political weekly in the country.

"She will be missed but we wish every success in her future endeavours."

Editor Matthew d'Ancona said: "Kimberly has been an inspirational publisher of The Spectator. "Her achievement at the magazine has been huge and she has done much to define its character and success for a decade.

"As Editor, I shall miss her wisdom, her experience and her flair and am sure she will go from strength to strength."
