Preparation day

Monday is essentially a system primer with preparation supper, followed by four days of mostly raw, quality and, where possible, organic foods designed to turbocharge your eliminative routes and organs and make them stand to attention. The focus of a slightly longer detox is to give the digestive system a break and inundate it with mega doses of easily accessible nutrition. Even after day one, you should notice the difference. Energy levels will tentatively rise and you should start to feel better, clearer and more energised. In order to prepare the system (particularly your bowels) for its healthy onslaught, kickstart with something such as brown rice salad with maximum fibre and B vitamins for dinner.

Combine 120g boiled, short-grain brown rice and 60g barley, adding a selection of steamed, seasonal veg, some salad leaves and fresh herbs of your choice with lemon juice, a pinch of salt and a good quality oil. Alternatively try porridge thinned with a little soya milk, some raisins, cinnamon or honey; or a warm, dried fruit compote wtih soaked, heated dried fruits and goat's or sheep's yoghurt on the side
