One is a movie star ... the other is a footballer's wife. And never was it more apparent than when Nicole Kidman and Victoria Beckham appeared together at the "party of the year" in New York last night.

Nicole, who was accompanied by fellow Oscar winner Adrien Brody, looking stunning in an off-the-shoulder Gucci gown. But while she showed her taste, Posh revealed almost everything in a Dolce and Gabbana number.

Ms Kidman was hosting the £2,300 a ticket charity party at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Victoria was the guest of honour at the party organised by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

All eyes were on the former Spice Girl, whose vintage D&G dress was almost see-through, echoing the evening's Goddess theme. She wore a diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet by the Spanish jewellers Carrera y Carrera. But her Chardonnay style was eclipsed by Nicole Kidman's champagne-coloured classic evening glamour.

Victoria arrived with designer Stefano Gabbana and supermodel Naomi Campbell.

There was no sign of the hostility between the two women that began when Beckham called the model a "massive cow" and a "bitch" during her TV show Victoria's Secrets nearly three years ago.

Kidman's closeness to Brody was noted by New York socialites. The two Oscar winners exchanged phone numbers at this year's Academy Awards and have now finally made it a date.

Best actress Kidman, 35, was clearly enjoying the company of her best actor only weeks after she dismissed rumours of an affair with Jude Law during the filming of Cold Mountain.

After her divorce from Tom Cruise two years ago, she has insisted that there is no new man in her life and calls herself "very single". Pianist star Brody, who is six years her junior, is also single and blamed the stress of filming the Holocaust drama, directed by Roman Polanski, for the break-up of his three-year relationship with actress Monet Mazur.

Other celebrities at last night's party, in aid of the museum's Costume Institute, included fashion designer Stella McCartney, actress Kate Hudson, rap mogul Sean "P Diddy" Coombes, with Diana Ross and hip hop star Ashanti providing the entertainment.
