Pop Idol is in the running for the Best Entertainment award at the British Academy Television Awards, the TV version of the Baftas, it was announced today.

The show which spawned Will Young and Gareth Gates is pitted against Have I Got News For You, Parkinson and Room 101. The awards, hosted by Chris Tarrant, will be held at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 21 April.

Pop Idol hosts Ant and Dec are also up for Best Entertainment Performance, facing competition from: John Bird and John Fortune for Bremner, Bird and Fortune; Paul Merton for Have I Got News For You; and last year's winner Graham Norton, for So Graham Norton.

Channel 4's Brass Eye has been nominated for Best Comedy programme, up against Bremner, Bird and Fortune, The Kumars at No 42 and The Sketch Show. Channel 4 was forced to broadcast an apology after the Independent Television Commission upheld thousands of viewers' complaints that Brass Eye's show about paedophiles had been offensive.

Brass Eye has also been nominated for Best Innovation, where it will compete against David Attenborough's Blue Planet, BBC2's Double Take and the eccentric betting show Banzai.
