Police quiz murder suspect

The garage where Hobson was finally spotted

Fugitive murder suspect Mark Hobson will today be quizzed by detectives after his dramatic capture in a North Yorkshire field.

After being recognised by 82-year-old garage owner Derek North the 34-year-old was finally cornered by armed police close to were he had been living rough.

He gave himself up without a struggle, bringing to an end a seven-day manhunt involving hundreds of officers. Mr North recognised Hobson after the wanted man had gone into his garage shop in the village of Shipton-by-Beningbrough.

He waited until Hobson had left and called the police. Hobson, who was last night understood to have been taken to hospital with a stomach injury, is expected to be questioned today over the deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Claire Sanderson, 27, and her twin sister Diane, whose bodies were discovered at his flat in Camblesforth, near Selby, last Sunday.

Both had been assaulted and Diane had been strangled and sexually assaulted. Detectives will also question him about the killings of pensioners James Britton, 80, and his wife Joan, 82, found stabbed to death at their home in Strensall.

Local resident Trevor Hainsworth said: "Mrs North came out and said: 'We have caught him'. Derek North then came outside and I said 'What's happening?' and he said, 'We have got him'."

Robin Wilson, 32, who works next door to the garage, said he had also called police seconds after recognising Hobson.

He said: "He looked scruffy and was wearing dirty jeans. He didn't say anything, he was just looking at his shoes."

Hobson had not been seen since his mother drove him to a hospital in York last Sunday, seven hours after Diane Sanderson was last seen alive by her family.

A spokeswoman for Harrogate Healthcare NHS Trust spokeswoman, said: "Mr Hobson is being treated for dehydration and minor abrasions. A further statement will be issued on Mr Hobson's condition at approximately 5.30pm today."
