Police hunt campus rapist
Police are hunting a rapist who attacked a 20-year-old student as she walked home through the Sussex University campus.
The man pulled her down some steps but she fought back, biting him on the left side of the neck. He then attacked and threatened to kill her. Detectives are studying CCTV footage to see if they can pinpoint the attacker.
The man is described as white, in his mid-thirties, about 14 stone and fat with a large stomach. He spoke with a northern accent, smelt of alcohol, had long, dark brown hair that was shorter at the front and about two days' growth of stubble.
His upper set of teeth were crooked and blackened around the gums. He had acne scars on his face.
Police say he was wearing a dark thigh-length trenchcoat with deep pockets and had a black round-neck T-shirt.
Detective Inspector Graham Pratt, who is leading the hunt for the rapist, said: "This was a violent and frightening attack.
"She managed to bite his neck hard enough to leave a mark. Anyone who recognises this
man must call the police immediately."
The University of Sussex and the Students' Union have also appealed for people to come forward with any information they might have relating to the attack, which happened in the early hours of Saturday at the Falmer campus near Brighton.
Professor Alasdair Smith, vice-chancellor of the University of Sussex, said: "Our first thoughts are with the student herself.
"The security of our students and staff is of the highest priority, which is why we have an extensive range of measures already in place.
"We hope that the CCTV footage we have passed on to the police will prove helpful and we would appeal to anyone with information to share it with the police."
