Plan for cheap walk-on deals

13 April 2012

Passengers could soon be offered cheap last-minute “walk-on” fares by long-distance rail operators in a bid to fill hundreds of seats unsold each day.

The move to overhaul ticket prices is being spearheaded by Virgin West Coast, Midland Mainline and GNER who hope it will boost the number of users.

Virgin is considering offering customers unsold tickets at the same price as
that offered 14 days before departure — a scheme which would reduce the price of a pay-on-the-day ticket from London to Manchester from £54 to £12.

The shake-up, according to one senior executive, is being planned “to stop carting fresh air around the country”.
