Perfect Pink diamond is sold for $23 million

Rare: the 14.24 carat pink diamond
12 April 2012

A pink diamond has sold at an auction in Hong Kong for more than $23 million, making it the most expensive jewel ever sold in Asia.

Christie's said the 14.23 carat diamond, The Perfect Pink, went for $23,165,968 to an anonymous buyer after an intense bidding war.

The pink diamond was expected to fetch between $14 million and $19 million but it fell short of the $46 million for which another, measuring 24.78 carats, sold in Geneva two weeks ago. That sale smashed the world record for the selling price of a jewel at auction.

Christie's says only 18 diamonds that are bigger than 10 carats and showing a distinct pure pink colour have gone on the block in 244 years of auction history.
