Pennon snaps up landfill business

SOUTH West Water group Pennon has extended its rubbish-tip interests. Its Viridor Waste subsidiary is paying £20m to take over Parkwood Holdings, a Sheffield-based landfill concern. Companies such as Pennon have extended into other businesses to lift earnings otherwise limited by water bill price caps. Waste management is seen as a growth area because of new European rules on refuse and recycling.
