The family of four children orphaned when their parents died in an accident involving a learner driver told today of their relief after they were awarded £365,000 compensation.

Wayne Nicholls, 38, a guitarist with rock 'n' roll band The Rapiers, and his wife Jacqueline, 33, died when their motorcycle collided with a Ford Fiesta driven by 17-year-old learner Monique Derazza, who was in the car with her instructor.

The couple had been on their way to an accountancy course at Southgate College, Enfield, when Ms Derazza pulled out of Park Drive into their path in Old Park Ridings in June 2005.

Mr Nicholls, who also worked as a motorcycle courier, died instantly and Mrs Nicholls died later the same day, leaving their four children — Samantha, Hannah, Scott and Wayne — orphaned.

All were under the age of 15 at the time of their parents' death. The three youngest, aged 14, 11 and seven, now live with their paternal aunt and uncle, Robert and Lorna Nicholls, in Tonbridge, Kent, with their own five children. The couple are also expecting a sixth baby.

The children's uncle welcomed the compensation payment but said, "no amount of money will ever bring back Wayne and Jackie".

Mr Nicholls said: "We are relieved that it is over now and we can start to get on with our lives. It has been a non-stop fight since the accident happened."
