Park barbie ban lifted in 130 parks

The heat is on - a barbecue ban has been lifted in Islington's parks, including Highbury Fields, the picturesque tree-edged green which is home to celebrities including author Nick Hornby and TV presenter Clive Anderson.

Paul Smith, the Labour-run council's executive member for environment, said: "Most people living in Islington don't have a garden and this gives everyone the chance to enjoy their own barbecue in our public spaces. We believe we can trust our residents to use barbecues responsibly and clean up when they leave."

Park rangers will give advice on safe barbecuing in the 130 green spaces, including using disposable types with stands so they do not singe the grass.

Leading chef Aldo Zilli said he welcomed the move by Islington just weeks after Hammersmith & Fulham council announced it would charge for certain park activities.

He said: "The benefits of barbecuing are very simple - people love cooking outside and it creates a fantastic atmosphere."

Islington's neighbour, Camden, only allows barbecues as part of organised outdoor events.
