Organ donor blackspots

12 April 2012

An organ donor map of London today reveals massive variations in the numbers on the NHS transplant register.

Around 1.8 million Londoners - just over 18 per cent of the population - have signed up to donate organs.

But in some areas the number on the NHS organ donor register is far lower. Only one in 10 in Barking and Dagenham, the Brent Teaching area and Newham have signed up, but Richmond and Twickenham, Hammersmith and Fulham and Wandsworth are high up the list.

The findings from NHS Blood and Transplant come as the health service launches a campaign for more donors.

Sally Johnson, of NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "Our job is to make sure that people know how to join and the difference they can make to the lives of others."
