One small step for students, one giant leap for Hackney

Two entrepreneurs based in Hackney will pay for budding space enthusiasts to go to university in a bid to help launch their careers.

The men who run a satellite company have set up a space scholarship scheme because they can't find enough well-qualified candidates to work for them.

Those studying computer science and electrical communication engineering will also be considered.

Avanti's co-founder David Bestwick said: "We started the scholarship because it's difficult to find engineers these days and it seems that physicists all want to be hedge fund managers." The company launched its first satellite in November.
