After 14 years, Jack has lost its place as the top name for newborn boys in England and Wales, beaten into second spot by Oliver.

Olivia was the most popular name for girls for the second year in a row, according to Office of National Statistics figures today, based on last year's records.

Harry came in third for boys, while Ruby and Chloe were the second and third most popular for girls.

There were no new entries in the top 10 for either sex compared with 2008, although there were regional variations with popularity of names. Oliver was top in six English regions, for example, but Jack was still first choice in Wales, the North-East and the North-West.

Mohammed ranked 16th nationally for boys, but was the most popular name in the West Midlands. There was a resurgence for names possibly once associated with the interwar generation, or earlier. Evie was tenth most popular girls' name last year, moving up 157 places since 1999.

Ruby was ranked 91 places lower 10 years ago, while Alfie and Charlie have followed a similar trend.

Six names in the boys' top 10 last year were also there 10 years previously - Jack, Joshua, Thomas, James, Daniel and William. Five girls' names endured the 10 years - Olivia, Chloe, Emily, Sophie and Jessica.

There were 706,248 live births in England and Wales last year.
