Now comedian rages against X Factor with Christmas single

12 April 2012

A comedian is appealing for contributions to a charity single that he hopes will beat X Factor to the Christmas number one.

Matt Berry, best-known for his roles in The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh, has written Christmas Song and is asking for people to upload their own video and audio versions to a website. The edited single will be released digitally and possibly as a CD, and all proceeds will be donated to homelessness charity Shelter.

Actor Simon Pegg has already backed the plan, tweeting: "It's for Shelter too as opposed to Simon Cowell's toxic stockpile."

Berry said he hoped the single could let hundreds of people achieve a Christmas number one instead: "My aim is to release a single that a whole bunch of people, young and old, can say they were a part of. We'd like school choirs, and any kind of instrument to be on there.

"I think it's a unique project, and a Christmas number one would be great."

Tracy Griffin, Shelter's director of fundraising, said: "Any money raised will go towards ensuring that Shelter can reach more people who need our help to stay in their homes this Christmas."

Upload contributions to absoluteradio.co.uk until November 14.
