Nokia upbeat despite flat sales

13 April 2012

MOBILE phones giant Nokia today claimed it was outperforming its rivals in the cut-throat mobile handsets market despite forecasting flat sales at best for the current quarter.

The Finnish group blamed the weak US dollar for effectively wiping out a sharp 10% jump in volume sales of its phones, a growth rate it said is faster than the industry average. The claim comes a day after reports that Vodafone may snub the group in favour of Asian manufacturers Samsung and Sanyo when it buys in a new range of next generation handsets.

Nokia said that currency fluctuations meant mobile phone sales in the three months to 30 September would be 'flat or slightly down year on year' but added that profits would come in at the top of expectations.
