Nokia knocks Apple as it shrugs off crisis

12 April 2012

Nokia today revealed its latest range of phones as it declared war on Apple.

Nokia is in turmoil, having lost two of its key executives in the past four days.

Anssi Vanjoki, who yesterday annouced he is quitting as executive vice-president of Nokia's mobile business, told the Nokiaworld conference in Docklands: "We have taken some knocks over the past few years, but we have transitioned Nokia for the future. Symbian (Nokia's phone software) is the most popular smartphone on the planet."

The firm's new handsets include the E7, which has a slide out keyboard, and the N8, a touchscreen device that can plug into a TV to play back high-definition video. At the launch, Nokia attacked Apple's recent problems with its iPhone's reception.

"We're not going to apologise for the fact we're not Apple or Google," said Nokia's Niklas Savander.

"We aim to sell 50 million of these new handsets. They perform day in, day out — no matter how hold you hold them. Nokia is back."
