New York crash: Timetable

This is a timetable of some of the key events of today's New York plane crash. All times are UK times.

1.00pm - American Airlines flight 587 should have left John F Kennedy airport in New York for Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, but is delayed;

2.00pm - Flight 587 - departs from Kennedy airport with 246 passengers and nine crew on board;

2.15pm - The plane, an Airbus A300, crashes in the Rockaway waterfront neighbourhood of Queen's, one of the New York boroughs about 15 miles from Manhattan;

2.25pm - A BA Concorde lands safely at Kennedy after a flight from Heathrow airport in west London;

2.37pm - The FTSE stock exchange index in London dips 178.9 points as news of the crash comes through;

2.38pm - As the first of 44 fire engines and 200 firefighters hurry to the crash scene, the Dow Jones industrial average on Wall Street falls 171.67 points;

2.50pm - Tony Blair, who learnt of the crash as he met Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Downing Street, said his thoughts were with the American people, but it was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash;

3.59pm - A report quotes a Bush administration official saying the FBI believed there was an explosion on board - a report later denied by a White House spokeswoman;

5.15pm - White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said it was too early to rule out terrorism but that the US Government had received no credible threats before the crash.
