New baby on the way for David and Samantha Cameron

"Completely thrilled": Samantha and David Cameron. She is three months pregnant, it was revealed today

Tory leader David Cameron's wife Samantha is three months pregnant, it was revealed this afternoon.

She is due to give birth in September when the family could be in Downing Street. The couple are said to be "completely thrilled".

The announcement comes days after Mr Cameron described his 38-year-old wife as his "secret weapon" for the general election campaign.

The baby will be the couple's fourth child. Their son Ivan died aged six in February last year. He had suffered from severe cerebral palsy.

The Camerons have a four-year-old son Arthur and six-year-old daughter Nancy. A spokesman for the Tory Party said: "The baby is due in September. David and Samantha are completely thrilled."

Tony Blair became the first prime minister for 150 years to have a child while in office when Leo was born in 2000.

Mrs Cameron, 38, is thought to have been trying for a child for several months.

Her husband recently indicated in interviews — including a recent TV appearance with Alan Titchmarsh at a time when he must have known of his wife's condition— that he would be happy to add another child to their family. Mr Cameron has admitted being broody several times recently.

Answering a question on population growth from an audience member at the Woodstock Literary Festival in September, he said: "I don't believe Britain is over-populated. I don't have any plans to reduce it.

"I would quite like to add to it, personally, by quite possibly one, at some stage in the future."

Touring a maternity unit in West Yorkshire in December he met a nine-hour-old baby and told reporters: "It makes me want another one."

The due date is not yet known - leaving unanswered the question whether the baby was conceived at Christmas or not.

Mrs Cameron will now be appearing in the election campaign with a tiny bump on show, which some voters may find appealing. The decision to make the pregnancy public was taken because she felt it was starting to show and wanted to forestall questions.

A party spokesman said she still plans to put in two days a week on the campaign trail, sometimes appearing with her husband and sometimes alone visiting social action programmes. She will also carry on working full time at the luxury stationers Smythson.

A friend of the family said: "They have been trying for while and it is a very joyful event."
