Music festivals go green in 2010

Music festivals will use composting lavatories, solar-powered sound systems and bio-degradable cutlery this summer in a bid to cut carbon emissions.

Reading, The Big Chill, Latitude and Lovebox in Victoria Park, Hackney, are among 10 events in a 10:10 campaign to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10 per cent during 2010.

The drive to cut down on the pollution caused by festivals is backed by artists including Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and Lily Allen.

Eugenie Harvey, campaign director of 10:10, said she hoped the move would discredit critics who claim tackling climate change means missing out on fun at festivals.
