Mumbai tax raid on home of Bollywood British actress

Upset: tax officials took boxes of documents from the home of Katrina Kaif

The Mumbai home of British actress Katrina Kaif was raided today by police and tax investigators.

Kaif, 26, a former model who has appeared at London fashion week and represented lingerie label La Senza, is one of Bollywood's box office successes.

The actress, whose parents live in Britain, opened the door of her seventh-floor apartment in the Bandra district at dawn to find seven tax officials and police.

She protested that as a British citizen she should not have been a target but was told that earnings in India were taxable and "being a British citizen did not amount to diplomatic immunity".

The actress was "upset" when officials seized several boxes containing documents. The home of another Bollywood leading actress, Priyanka Chopra, was also raided.

It was claimed the inquiry began after a tip-off from an unidentified actress who had fallen out of the spotlight and informed tax authorities.
