13 April 2012

Police have found the mother of a three-year-old boy discovered wandering alone on an inner city street earlier this week.

West Midlands Police said the child's mother lives in London and that her son had been staying in Birmingham with her consent.

The toddler was found in Woodstock Road, in the Handsworth area of the city, at about 9.30pm on Tuesday.

A force spokeswoman said: "We have located the boy's mother. She lives in the London area.

"We have established the boy is aged three and is believed to have been staying in the Birmingham area with his mother's consent.

"He remains in foster care at present and police inquiries continue."

The spokeswoman said police had received a number of phone calls overnight following a public appeal for help to identify the child and that officers had been following up positive lines of inquiry this morning.
